TitleLetter from Queen Victoria to Lord John Russell
Date9 February 1860
WriterVictoria, Queen
AddresseeRussell, John, Lord
DescriptionThe Queen returns the enclosures in Lord John's letter of yesterday. She does not think his reply is an answer to hers of the 5th. As the answers from France and Austria regarding England's proposals are before Government, as is the Emperor's answer to England's questions about whether an attempt to incorporate Savoy with France is contemplated, the Queen feels she has a right to expect an explicit expression of the Cabinet's opinion regarding the course to be followed, and she therefore repeats her wish for her letter to be communicated to the Cabinet. Silence on the subject of France's desire to acquire Savoy might be construed as acquiescence by the British Government.
