TitleLetter from Sir Charles Eastlake to the Prince Consort
Date12 August 1859
WriterEastlake, Charles, Sir; Secretary to the Fine Arts Commission
AddresseeAlbert, Prince Consort
DescriptionLetter from Sir Charles Eastlake to the Prince Consort reporting that he had read the Prince's previous letter to Maclise, which made a 'strong impression on him'. However, he states that Maclise's objection to the style of fresco is mostly due to the large number of joinings his painting will require. Due to this Eastlake again suggests the method of water-glass painting to address this problem and that Maclise should visit Berlin to investigate the method further. He also reports that the stained glass in the window opposite the painting can be removed and replaced with colour-less glass. Also that he reported the Prince's suggestion to reflect light with a sheet but reports it is too dark and instead suggests the use of mirrors or gas [lighting].
