TitleQueen Victoria's Copy Letter Books
Date29 February 1828 - 10 October 1843
DescriptionThese paper notebooks include over 2000 copies made from the private correspondence of Princess Victoria (later Queen) with family and friends across Europe including royalty, aristocracy and statesmen. The volumes appear to have been numbered at the time. Volumes 1-16 have the note 'Letters written by Princess Victoria. Without any assistance' and are signed by Princess Victoria and signed or initialled by Baroness Lehzen. Subsequent volumes state that they include copies of letters by Princess Victoria until volume 43, which notes the now Queen Victoria's change of status. The first use of flimsy copies can be found in QVLB/69/14 and volume 70 is noted as containing 'Impressions of letters (written by the Queen) by the aid of a copying -machine', again signed by Baroness Lehzen. It seems that the copies to that point are in the hand of the Baroness, while the 'impressions' are in that of the Queen herself.
