Correspondence of William IV
Reference
GEO/MAIN/44968-44969
Record Type
Correspondence
Title
Letter from the Duke of Clarence to George, Prince of Wales
Date
29 October 1808 [?]
Writer
Clarence and St Andrews, William, Duke of
Addressee
George, Prince of Wales (1762-1830)
Description
Thanking the Prince for the kind treatment of George [FitzClarence; he had been made Lieutenant in the Prince's Regiment and was sailing for Corunna] The Duke refers contemptibly to the Convention [of Cintra] and to the Generals who should be tried. He would be happy to be given the command of the coasts of Spain, Portugal and the Mediterranean on the HMS Barfleur.
Place Of Writing
Portsmouth
Notes
This letter appears in Aspinall before GEO/MAIN/44966-44967 and is dated [? 29 October 1808]; a note on the margin of the document, however, reads [?Nov. 5 1808]. Because in GEO/MAIN/44966-44967 dated 1 November [Tuesday] the Duke says he will be in Windsor that Friday [4 November], it seems impossible that the present letter written from Portsmouth coudl have been written after that. We have, therefore to conclude that the date in the margin of GEO/MAIN/44968-44969 is wrong and this letter should preceed GEO/MAIN/44966-44967.
