Letter from Sir Taylor Herbert to Lord Grey
Date
22 July 1832

Taylor, Herbert, Sir; private secretary to William IV

Description
Sir Herbert communicates the King's pleasure in reading Lord Grey's praise of the late Duke of York's [ Prince Frederick] administration, of his impartiality and consideration of the Officers' claims. Taking inspiration from the the Duke of York's exemplary conduct the King believes in the constant and unreserved communication between Military authorities and Government - the King also believes that the rumoured non-favourable feelings of the Horse Guards towards the Government are mainly due to their specific relationship with the Tory Administration under the Duke of Wellington.
On the issue of the Government of Stirling Castle, the King is surprised the Earl of Mar is claiming it to be a hereditary office of his family.
Briefly mentioning the animated situation in the House of Lords.
The King is very pleased with the reported account of Sir Hussey Vivian of the state of Ireland: if it was not for the Ultra Catholics, Orangists and political Agitators, the Irish would be a happy people.
