Title
Letter from Lord Fitzroy Somerset to Sir Herbert Taylor, on the subject of corporal punishment in the army
Date
10 April 1833
Writer
Somerset, FitzRoy, Lord
Addressee
Taylor, Herbert, Sir
Description
Thanking Sir Herbert for the letters sent [in which the opinion of the King on the matter of corporal punishment is explained], which FitzRoy will forward to Lord Hill. Fitzroy sends to Sir Herbert a copy of a letter from Lord Hill discussing a proposition by Sir John Hobhouse.
Lord Grey wants to consider with the Duke of Wellington the possibility of regulating corporal punishment [i.e. putting a limit to the number of slashes].
In a final note marked as 'Private', FitzRoy wants to state that Lord Hill's objection to Hobhouse's proposition was positive. Mr [Edward] Ellice suggests discussing the matter the following week.
